Sector(s)

In conjunction with The Engineering Practice, Anthony White Consulting Ltd were appointed to design new replacement Building Management Systems (BMS) at St Mark’s, Upton, and Church Hill House hospitals for Berkshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust.

Anthony White Consulting Ltd designed the control strategy and scope of works for new BMS systems that provided improved levels of control of the site heating, hot water, and ventilation systems.

New Trend BMS systems that included local IQView touch screen interfaces within plantrooms and centralised IQ Vision supervisor for building monitoring and management, replaced the existing failing Allen Martin Systems to initially control the existing heating systems plus the facility for future BMS expansion including metering for energy monitoring.

Anthony White Consulting Ltd worked closely with NHS Estates Design and Technical Services (EDTS) who acted as Principal Designers and project managers for the projects.

In addition to the provision of design services, Anthony White Consulting Ltd provided technical advice supporting procurement of the project works and contractor appointment and undertook construction phase monitoring, witness testing and commissioning at project handover.

Key Points

  • The BMS can control the building’s energy consumption, through monitoring energy usage patterns and demand and optimising building services operation, reducing costs and contributing towards meeting carbon emission targets.
  • The BMS receives and communicates different levels of alarm conditions, allowing the client and maintenance team to track conditions and respond quickly if the need arises. The result is lower building operating costs and occupancy comfort which leads to improved employee productivity and their well-being.
  • The BMS immediately detects and provides notification when a serious fault requires attention by way of critical alarms, reducing downtown and impact on business operations.
  • The BMS will prolong the life expectancy of the heating, hot water and ventilation plant and equipment through monitoring and maintaining their operation within parameters and settings that allow plant and equipment to remain off whenever possible.
